We had a tremendous Get-Out-the-Vote rally Saturday morning. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky flew straight from Washington after an all-night Congressional session to give Joe and a hundred or so volunteers a rousing send-off before they hit the streets to remind Joe’s supporters to vote on Election Day!

Though we had a great day on Saturday, our work is far from done. We need to contact more than 5,000 persons between now and Election Day to remind them to vote. Won’t you give us a hand?

Please stop by the campaign office (1774 W. Greenleaf) today or tomorrow and we’ll send you out on the streets or put you to work on the phones. We’re open today (Sunday) from 12 Noon to 9:00 p.m. and tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

We also need your help on Election Day. We could use you from the moment the polls open to the final count, but even if you can afford to give only a few hours, your help will be much appreciated. Please call our office at 773-973-4900 to volunteer.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s “State of the County Address”

Please join me as I host Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle for a “State of the County Address” this Thursday, February 17th, 7:00 pm at New Field School, 1701 W. Morse (at Clark). Parking is available in the lot at the southeast corner of Clark and Farwell. I am co-hosting this event with 49th Ward Committeeman David Fagus.

Toni Preckwinkle took office as Cook County Board President in early December expecting to face significant challenges. What she found after taking the reins from former President Todd Stroger was worse than anyone had expected. Come hear what President Preckwinkle has been working on in her first 75 days in office, including her no-nonsense approach to cutting waste and inefficiency in County government.

President Preckwinkle will present her new budget and seek input, comments and suggestions from you and your neighbors. Refreshments will be served.

I look forward to seeing you at what promises to be a very informative evening.

Chicago Tribune endorses Joe Moore

Alderman Joe Moore today received the strong endorsement of the Chicago Tribune, which said, “he has pushed for sensible spending, transparent government and a concerted fight against Chicago’s persistent political corruption. He called out his colleagues for their sham efforts to protect themselves from the scrutiny of Chicago’s inspector general. He has implemented ‘participative budgeting’ to let citizens have a say in how he allocates money targeted for the neighborhood. Challenger Brian White has been a leader in affordable housing efforts, but he didn’t make much of an argument against the incumbent. Moore is endorsed.”

Moore has been a consistent voice in support of school funding and the rights of educators. CTU President Karen Lewis, in announcing the union’s endorsement slate for 2011, “We have to work day and night so that we have a City Council that hears educators’, parents’ and students’ message loud and clear — improve our neighborhood schools now.”

Attend the 49TH WARD MAYORAL CANDIDATE FORUM on Saturday, February 5th, 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon, at Jordan Community School, 7414 N. Wolcott (between Fargo and Birchwood).

Sponsored by the 49th Ward Democratic Party, this forum is open to the public and is being held in conjunction with the Democratic Party’s Endorsement Session. All mayoral candidates have been invited to attend, including Gery Chico, Miguel del Valle, Rahm Emanuel, Carol Moseley Braun, Patricia Van Pelt Watkins and William “Dock” Walls. We will also hear from the candidates for City Clerk. After you hear from the candidates, cast your ballot at the 49th Ward Early Voting site at the Pottawattomie Park Fieldhouse, 7340 N. Gay Chicago Magazine endorses Joe Moore

Joe Moore received the endorsement of one of the pre-eminent publications in Chicago’s Gay and Lesbian community–Gay Chicago Magazine. In endorsing Joe’s re-election, Gay Chicago Magazine joins the Chicago Sun-Times , which endorsed his re-election last week, as the only publications thus far to weigh in on the 49th Ward Aldermanic race.

“Politics in the 49th Ward can be contentious and boisterous, to say the least. It’s a diverse collection of people with widely varying interests, from distinctive communities and business hubs to college students who rent and homeowners who want stable neighborhoods and good schools.

“It’s a tough ward to represent, but we think Ald. Joe Moore has actually gotten better and better at it in the 20 years he’s held the job. He gets criticism for taking on national and even international issues sometimes, as when he urged the City Council to oppose the Iraq War, got the Council to ban foie gras and fought to keep Walmart out of Chicago unless it changed its labor practices. But there are people who love that he carries the flag of progressivism in the City Council; no less than The Nation named Moore the country’s Most Valuable Local Official in 2008 for his advocacy of progressive causes.

“Moore also faced criticism in the past that he neglected more mundane residents’ concerns in the ward–deteriorating streets and infrastructure, crime, development and so forth–but he’s noticeably upped his game in addressing those issues his past two terms and that criticism has quieted. He is an outspoken voice in the City Council for progressive causes… With new aldermen expected to join the City Council, Moore’s experience and history of independence will be assets.”

My wife Barbara and I are opening our home to our friends and supporters this Monday evening (January 24th) for my annual fundraising benefit .
